Finally, in the 61st minute, the deadlock was broken. And by who else? The "Little Magician" Latapy. His clinical low left foot drive rebounded off the left upright and then goalkeeper Bradley Guzan before crossing the line and giving T&T a 1-0 lead. Latas's chance had come as a result of Chris Birchall's powerful run through midfield from which he found Edwards on the right flank. Edwards's deep, pin-point cross in turn found the late-arriving Latapy, and the rest was history.

Dwight Yorke converted a 79th-minute penalty to give Trinidad & Tobago a 2:1 victory over the United States on Wednesday, moving it to the brink of the the final round of World Cup qualifying. It was the Soca Warriors' first victory over the USA in 12 tries in World Cup qualifying, and ended the Stars & Stripes' six-game winning streak in their bid to reach the 2010 finals in South Africa.

For the U.S., the loss was not entirely unexpected. Coach Bob Bradley fielded a young team, starting only three of the players who had crushed Cuba. Trinidad and Tobago took the lead on a goal by 40-year-old Russell Latapy, who had come out of international retirement, but the U.S. tied it on a goal by Charlie Davies off a pass from Jozy Altidore. It was an Altidore mistake that led to the loss. The teenager brought down Makan Hislop in the penalty area and thus allowed another veteran, Dwight Yorke, to give Trinidad and Tobago the win with a well-struck penalty kick.
