13 Police Officers cleared of the deaths of 6 persons

Magistrate Gail Gonzales presiding as Coroner yesterday cleared 13 police officers of any wrong doing in the deaths of 6 persons. The officers were cleared at the Arima Magistrates Second Court with the magistrate saying that the officers were in no way negligent in discharging their duties.

The rulings were as a result of two (2) shootings that took place. One in which 5 persons were killed in Wallerfield and the other in which 1 man was allegedly killed by police in Blanchisseuse.

Tears of hurt, anger and frustration streamed down the faces of relatives yesterday, who packed the Arima Magistrates' Second Court to hear the outcome of Magistrate Gail Gonzales's ruling into the shooting deaths of five persons at the hands of police officers in Wallerfield.

Thirteeen policemen walked out of the Arima Magistrates’ Court yesterday, having been cleared of six fatal shootings, including the five deaths at Wallerfield in 2007. For the first time, the policemen did not hide their faces. They calmly exited the courthouse and walked across to the nearby police station, no longer hiding their faces from media cameras.
