Destra Garcia
|
Destra started singing calypso at the age of 10, taking the Junior Calypso Monarch title at age 14 and 15. She was also a member of the NCC Junior Roving Tent.
In 1999, Roy Cape took notice of her while performing her runaway hit "Ah Have a Man Already" and invited the vivacious young star to become the first lead Female vocalist of Roy Cape All Stars. In 2001, she enjoyed a bumper year with her third single "Tremble it". She placed fourth in the Soca Monarch competition and third in the Road March race. The following year, she recorded three singles on the band's CD, "Set it Off", "Sex Appeal" and "Wrong Bam Bam". After three and a half years, she parted ways with the band to pursue a brief solo career, which spawned her debut album, Red, White and Black. Shortly thereafter she became lead vocalist for the band Atlantik.
In 2003, Destra released Red, White and Black, which included renowned hit "It's Carnival", a duet with fellow Soca artiste Machel Montano. The song later became the virtual anthem for Trinidad and Tobago Carnival.
In the years to follow, Destra attained many awards and accreditations, including Best Female Songwriter 2004-2007. Destra has received the Soca Award twelve times and holds four COTT (Copyright Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago) Awards. She remains one of the most requested female Soca artists of the Caribbean and continues to re-invent her style of music and fashion.
