On Saturday October 23, 2010 in New York City at the 22nd Annual Caribbean Sunshine Awards hosted by Trinidad’s infamous comedians, the fabulous Nikki Crosby and the hilarious Errol Fabian, Trinidadian Alfred "Sack" Mayers was inducted into the Sunshine Awards Steelband Hall of Fame.

On receiving his award from Co-Founder and Chairman of the Sunshine Awards Dr. Hollis "Chalkdust" Liverpool, the 81 year old Alfed "Sack" Mayers spoke of his introduction to the steelband movement and being a part of Alexander's Ragtime Band which was Trinidad and Tobago's first steel pan band formed in 1940. He spoke of his days with the "Red Army" and forming and being a part of the "Merry Makers" steel band. Alfred "Sack" also taught the members of Dixieland to play pan and has even played pan with his band as entertainment aboard The Princess Cruises for a number of years.

Present at the ceremony was Sack's granddaughter and author of "Collections of a See Through Soul" Onika Pascal. On hearing her grandfather speak of his involvement in the steel band movement her memories of childhood years came alive. "I remember pictures, the boxes with the Merry Maker logo in which the pans were stored. I remember him leaving for shows, being interviewed at least 3 times by writers for information for text book, some of which I found online for purchase and still I can’t believe how much it’s considered history".

Also honoured alongside Alfred 'Sack' Mayers that night for their contribution to Culture were Trinidad’s Chutney Queen Drupatee, Guinean (West African) musician Famoro Dioubate, Ramiro Crawford of Costa Rica, Yves Joseph of Haiti’s most famous musical band Tabou Combo, Jennifer Sealy, dance director of Barbados’ Dance Africa accepted the group’s behalf, and Dorbrene O’Marde noted playwright of Antigua.

Other inductees into the "Calypso and Steelband Hall of Fame" were Trinidad’s Bill Trotman, Guyana’s Dave Martins and the Tradewinds, and Trinidad’s Norman Darway Adams.
