Patch has been writing for many years but started singing in 1999 with a monster hit called "Comess". Success followed success with "Macomere", "Misbehavin", "De Tail Gone", "Calling me Name". But just in case you discovered soca music within the last year, you certainly would have heard his MEGA hit "Rum & Roti" (When dey drink dey rum, dey only want roti). Patch's real name is Roger Joseph and he has been in the industry for about 10 years. Roger took time out from the studio to talk to Trinibeat.com ACCESS GRANTED about the past 2009 and upcoming 2010 Carnival season

That name Patch. How you came up with that name?
I was born with a gold patch in my hair from small. So I have that from since I was growing up as a little child in Cedros.

You from Cedros, you is a country boy?
(Patch laughing) I moved to Morvant around the age of 10. I have been there ever since, so although I born in the country, I really grow up a town boy.

So how you got into the entertainment industry?
I was on a negative road, and decided to change. I was always good at getting a tune in my head, so I decided to "eat ah food" and see about my family, so I jumped in. It was easy enough for me.

In the early I was born with a gold patch in my hair from small. days it always tuff as an artist. Who inspired and encouraged you?
Iwer George and Ronnie McIntosh. Iwer was the first person to put a mike in my hand down south. When I was Morvant in the beginning of my career he used to come and pick me up, all up Toco we gone. Also John Wayne, we real tight. We went to primary school, secondary school, the works, he is mih horse.

Iwer! You know that a lot of people don't like Iwer. Your experience is different from other I have spoken too.
If they don't like him, how come they jumping to his music?

But they can't argue success. Can they?
Of course not, and most of his detractors are people less successful in the industry. The man is a genius, with three or four lines he can make a whole song and have people jumping. Ronnie McIntosh was my inspiration for "Comess" (Comess in the place) produced by Cliff Harris. That was what I called my first real big hit".

Rum & Roti (When they drink they rum they only want roti). This mega hit of yours. Tell us about it.
It was sudden and real strange. I was in my producer's (at the time) studio in Brooklyn, when his wife came up to me and said "Patch boy everybody singing about rum, sing something nah boy". I just turned and tell she, "gyul when dem people drink dey rum, they only want roti yes" and that was it. I sit down and ah say that is mih song right dey. I had to work real hard in the studio to get my voice in order for that song.

But this song has put you in a whole new league?
Yeah boy, but I had to deal with some issues coming out of that.

Issues! How so?
Impersonators, People claiming that they are Patch and singing in concerts. I even saw a flier poster with my name and another artist picture on it. I was none the wiser. Them pirates boy, they does take food out we mouth.

So 2009 was mixed with success and frustration?
Yeah, it was mixed up, but was for the better at the end.

You were in the studio before you came here. What were you doing there? Next years cut?
Boy Patch coming out bad for next year. I have some mind blowing collaborations. Watch this space...

Trinibeat was given an exclusive insight to his studio songs and we must say Patch will be hotter than 2009 for the upcoming carnival season. Patch also disclosed of plans to enter the Chutney Soca Monarch.
